Cleaning Your CPAP Equipment

CPAP Nasal Mask“How often should I clean my CPAP equipment?”

One of the most important factors in maintaining CPAP compliance is taking proper care of your CPAP equipment. In order to have successful CPAP therapy, you must make your treatment a priority, and that means regularly cleaning and maintaining your CPAP equipment.

The good news is that taking care of your equipment is pretty easy, and not very time consuming.

 

BLOWER UNIT

  • Wipe the unit with a damp cloth and mild dish detergent.
  • Allow the unit to dry before plugging the unit in.

 

Cleaning Your CPAP EquipmentMASK/NASAL PILLOWS/SWIVEL ADAPTER

Replace mask every 3 months; replace nasal pillows monthly.

  • Daily, wash with mild soapy water (Ivory soap recommended), rinse well.
  • NEVER clean the mask with alcohol!

 


HEADGEAR/CHIN STRAP

Replace headgear and chinstrap every 6 months.

  • Weekly, hand wash in a standard laundry detergent and air dry.
  • DO NOT use bleach!
  • DO NOT dry in a dryer or iron the headgear or chin strap!

Cleaning Your CPAP Tubing TUBING

Replace tubing every 3 months.

  • Weekly, wash in mild soapy water.
  • Rinse and hang to dry.

 

HUMIDIFIER – NON-HEATED

  • Daily, wash humidifier in mild soap water, rinse well.
  • Monthly, soak the humidifier for 20 minutes in a solution containing:

o   1 cup white vinegar

o   1 ½ cups of distilled water

o   Rinse well with warm water

 

HUMIDIFIER – HEATED

Replace heated chamber every 6 months.

  • Daily, wash humidifier in mild soap water (Ivory), rinse well.
  • Monthly, soak the humidifier for 20 minutes in a solution containing:

o   1 cup white vinegar

o   1 ½ cups of distilled water

o   Rinse well with warm water

 

FILTERS

  • Respironics CPAP/Bi-level

o   Gray: Wash weekly with soapy water, rinse well, and allow to dry before placing in the unit. Replace every 6 months.

o   White: Replace monthly.

 

  • ResMed/Fisher & Paykel

o   Filter Strips — Check the strips periodically. Replace every 6 months.

 

NOTE: Individual insurance plans determine the frequency as to when CPAP supplies are covered.
